Breeding Philosophy
Why We Breed Classic/Bully American Bulldogs

When people ask us what type of American Bulldog we breed, the answer is simple: Classic/Bully. Some people call them Johnson type. Whatever you call them, these are the dogs we have spent 26 years building our program around.
That was not an accident. It was a choice we made early and have stayed committed to ever since.
What Classic/Bully Type Means to Us
Classic/Bully American Bulldogs are the heavier-boned, wider-chested dogs with that unmistakable head. Strong jaw, broad skull, powerful build. When you see one, you know it.
But type is not just about appearance. The Classic/Bully American Bulldog was bred to be a family dog with the temperament to back up the look. Confident without being aggressive. Protective without being unpredictable. Loyal to the core.
That combination of structure and temperament is what drew us to the breed in 1998. We saw our first American Bulldog and knew immediately that this was the dog we wanted to dedicate our lives to.
Why Not Both Types?
There is nothing wrong with Standard (Scott type) American Bulldogs. They are leaner, more athletic, and have their own strengths. But breeding both types under one roof means compromising on both. You cannot build a tight, consistent program when you are pulling in two different directions.
We chose one lane and stayed in it. Every breeding decision we make is measured against the ABRA breed standard for the Classic/Bully type. That focus is what allows us to produce dogs that are consistent generation after generation.
If you want to understand the differences between the types in detail, the American Bulldog Archive has a full breakdown.
What We Look For in Every Dog
After 26 years, our criteria have been refined down to three things that matter most:
1. Correct Structure
A dog that is built right moves right and lives longer. We look for proper bone, balanced proportions, correct topline, and the breed-typical head that defines the Classic/Bully type. Flashy colors and big size mean nothing if the dog is not structurally sound.
2. Stable Temperament
An American Bulldog is a powerful animal. That power has to come with a brain. Every dog in our program is evaluated for confidence, trainability, and how they handle new situations. A nervous dog or an unpredictable dog does not belong in a breeding program, no matter how good it looks.
3. Proven Health
Every breeding dog at Rosebull is health tested. DNA panels for genetic diseases. Hip certification. We do not cut corners on this. The fastest way to ruin a bloodline is to skip health testing because a dog "looks healthy."
What 26 Years Has Taught Us
When we started in 2000, we were learning. We made mistakes. We bred dogs that we would not breed today. That is part of the process.
What changed over time is our ability to see beyond the surface. A young breeder gets excited about a big dog with a pretty head. An experienced breeder looks at movement, looks at the pedigree, looks at what that dog's parents and grandparents produced, and makes a decision based on the whole picture.
Lance and I have owned the American Bulldog Registry and Archives (ABRA) since 2005. We operate the world's largest American Bulldog pedigree database. We have judged thousands of American Bulldogs across Canada, the USA, Russia, the UK, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, and Italy.
That experience is not just a resume item. It is what informs every single breeding we do at Rosebull. We have seen what works and what does not, across thousands of dogs and dozens of bloodlines.
The Dogs Tell the Story
At the end of the day, the proof is in the dogs. You can see our current breeding dogs on the Our Dogs page, and every one of them has a full, searchable pedigree on pedigreedatabase.ca.
We are not hiding anything. The pedigrees are public. The health results are documented. The dogs speak for themselves.
That is how we think breeding should work.
