American Bulldog Puppies in Canada: A Buyer's Guide

By Lesli Rose, ABRA registrar since 2005. Updated May 15, 2026.

This guide covers what every Canadian buyer should know before paying a deposit on an American Bulldog puppy. ABRA registration, shipping, the six questions to ask any breeder, and how Rosebull places puppies across Canada from our home in Harvey, New Brunswick.

What "ABRA-registered" actually means

The American Bulldog Registry and Archives (ABRA) is the active registry for American Bulldogs in North America. An ABRA-registered puppy ships with paperwork that traces its parents, grandparents, and (typically) five-plus generations of lineage. The paper has a registration number; that number is searchable on pedigreedatabase.ca.

What ABRA registration does NOT do: it does not certify health. A registered puppy can come from health-tested parents or from parents the breeder never tested. The registration verifies the dog is who the paper says it is. Health is a separate question, addressed below.

Lesli Rose has been the ABRA registrar since 2005. That means every Rosebull puppy is registered through our own hand and every breeder we work with has gone through our process. Read more on /about.

How shipping works coast to coast

Rosebull has placed American Bulldog puppies in every Canadian province. The two paths:

What we do not do: third-party "pet shipping" companies that contact buyers cold and quote vague international fees. That is the most common puppy scam pattern. Read the full anti-scam guide.

The six questions every Canadian buyer should ask

Ask any American Bulldog breeder, anywhere in Canada, these six questions before deposit:

  1. What is the registration number, and where can I look it up? ABRA registration numbers are searchable. A breeder who can't or won't share the number is not ABRA-registered.
  2. OFA hips and elbows on both parents. What are the exact ratings? "Tested" is not a rating. Ask for "Good", "Excellent", "Fair", or for the elbow grade. Ratings are public on ofa.org.
  3. Embark or equivalent full genetic panel on both parents. Show me the report. American Bulldogs carry NCL, Ichthyosis, and HUU. A breeder who hasn't tested can produce affected puppies.
  4. Can we do a live video call with the puppy before I send a deposit? Anyone refusing this is not selling you the dog they say they are.
  5. What is your written health guarantee, and what is your take-back clause? Read the contract before paying. Rosebull's guarantee is here.
  6. How long have you been breeding this breed specifically? American Bulldog is not American Bully. Cross-breed switchers in the last 5 years often lack the lineage knowledge of a multi-decade kennel.

When to wait for a Rosebull litter, when to look elsewhere

Rosebull does 1-3 litters per year. If a buyer needs a puppy in the next 60 days and we don't have a litter ready, we are open about it: there are other ABRA-registered Canadian breeders. Ask for our recommendations, by region.

Wait for Rosebull if: you specifically want a Classic or Bully type from our breeding program; you want OFA + Embark on both parents; you value lineage going back to the original Scott and Johnson dogs; you want lifetime breeder support and a take-back clause that means it.

Look elsewhere (we'll help) if: you need a puppy in the next 30-60 days and we don't have one; you live in a region where a closer ABRA breeder makes more sense; you want a specialized working line (we can refer to working-only kennels).

Frequently asked questions

What does ABRA-registered mean?

ABRA is the American Bulldog Registry and Archives, the active registry for American Bulldogs in North America. An ABRA-registered puppy ships with paperwork that verifies its parents, lineage, and registration number. Lesli Rose has been the ABRA registrar since 2005.

How much does it cost to ship an American Bulldog puppy across Canada?

Cargojet escorted air transport from Moncton or Halifax to most major Canadian cities runs $400-1,000 depending on city and crate size. Local in-person pickup at our home in Harvey, NB is free. We do not use third-party 'pet shippers' who contact buyers out of nowhere.

Are Rosebull puppies available outside the Maritimes?

Yes. We have placed Rosebull American Bulldogs in every Canadian province plus the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. Cross-Canada placement is normal, not exceptional.

What questions should I ask any Canadian American Bulldog breeder?

Ask for: ABRA (or other recognized) registration number, OFA hip and elbow results on both parents, Embark genetic panel on both parents (NCL, Ichthyosis, HUU), live video call before deposit, written health guarantee. Any breeder who refuses any of these is the wrong breeder.

How long is the wait for a Rosebull puppy?

Wait time depends on the litter and the match. We typically have 1-3 litters per year. Submit an application at /puppies and we reply to qualified inquiries within 5 business days. Deposits secure waitlist position; specific puppy is matched at 7-8 weeks.

Should I import an American Bulldog from the United States instead?

Most Canadian buyers should not. Cross-border puppy import requires CFIA paperwork, additional vet checks, and exposes the buyer to scam risk that domestic placement does not. There are several established ABRA-registered breeders in Canada, including Rosebull. Domestic is faster, cheaper, and safer.
